How to get WhatsApp Business API access
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
You do not apply to WhatsApp directly. Most businesses get access through a provider that connects their number to the WhatsApp Business Platform and gives them an inbox.
What you need before you start
- A business with a website or other public presence
- A Meta Business account, which your provider can help you create
- A phone number that can receive an OTP by SMS or voice call, either a virtual number or a regular SIM
- A name and logo for your WhatsApp Business profile
Step 1: choose a provider
Pick a provider that gives your team a shared inbox and the features you need. Compare the user limits, how messaging charges are shown, and what support is included.
Step 2: connect your number
Your provider guides you through connecting the number to the WhatsApp Business Platform. If the number is already on the API with another provider, it can usually be migrated. If it is on the Business app, check whether Coexistence is supported for your number.
Step 3: set up your profile and templates
Fill in your business profile, then create message templates for anything you want to send first, such as order updates or offers. Templates are reviewed and approved before they can be sent.
Step 4: invite your team
Add your agents, set up tags and assignment rules, and save quick replies for common questions so everyone answers consistently.
The green tick
The green tick marks an Official Business Account. WhatsApp decides based on factors such as brand credibility and public presence. It is optional, and approval is not needed to start messaging customers.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does it take to get set up?
- Connecting a number and sending a first message can be done quickly once your Meta Business account is ready. Template approval and any verification steps add some waiting time.
- Can I use my existing business number?
- Usually yes, as long as it can receive an OTP. Numbers on another API provider can be migrated, and numbers on the Business app may be able to use Coexistence.
