WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API
Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
Most businesses start on the free WhatsApp Business app, then hit its limits as the team grows. The WhatsApp Business API removes those limits, but it works differently. Here is what each one is for.
What the WhatsApp Business app is
The WhatsApp Business app is a free app for a small business owner. You answer chats from a phone, set up a catalog, labels and quick replies, and can link a small number of devices to the same account.
- Good for one person or a very small team
- Chats live on the phone and linked devices
- Limited bulk messaging and no true shared inbox with assignment
What the WhatsApp Business API is
The WhatsApp Business Platform, often called the API or Cloud API, is how software connects to WhatsApp. It has no inbox of its own. You use a platform such as a team inbox on top of it, and that platform adds the screens, rules and reports.
- Many agents can work on one number at the same time
- Approved message templates for bulk campaigns and notifications
- Automation, assignment rules, reporting, APIs and webhooks
- Meta charges per message based on the type of message
Can you use both on one number?
Often yes. WhatsApp Coexistence lets a supported number stay in the Business app while it is also connected to a platform. Availability depends on Meta's support for your number and region, and some Business app features are not available once the number is connected to the API.
How to decide
- Stay on the app if one or two people answer a few chats a day
- Move to the API when several people share the number, you send campaigns, or you need reports and automation
- Check Coexistence first if your team wants to keep using the app on their phones
Try it on your own number

Frequently asked questions
- Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
- The API itself is accessed through a provider and Meta charges for messages by type. Many provider plans, including WatMark's, are billed monthly, and Meta's message charges are separate.
- Do I lose my chat history when I move to the API?
- It depends on how the number is connected. Check with your provider before you migrate, and ask about Coexistence if you want to keep using the Business app.
